​​​​Simcoe County, Barrie and Orillia region is home to a robust medtech cluster and innovation ecosystem, including: medical devices and equipment, research and medical laboratories, and digital health solutions. It also hosts leading education programs developed to fuel growth in this sector; these include applied, graduate, post-graduate, and professional development programs through Georgian College, Lakehead U​niv​ersity, and through the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre​ partnerships with University of Toronto and York University. This well-developed network of advanced manufacturers, academic institutions, dedicated government stakeholders, and business innovation services is crucial to growing the regional sector and driving new innovations.  
The core of this cluster are companies that have long specialized in medical manufacturing and technologies—such as SouthmedicInterspec Systems, Baxter Canadaand Deutra Med​, to name a few—as well as headquarters for national and international med innovators, including LifeCentre by LifeLabs, Saint Elizabeth Health Care, and MediPharm Labs. Building on this foundation, the region has supported the pivot of 20+ additional companies (many permanently) into this cluster for the production of PPE, medical supplies, sanitizer, and other essential goods. These include major manufacturers, such as Molded Precision Components, Industrial Filter Manufacturing, Canadian MistTechform, Innovative Automation​Beatti​es Distillery​, Heretic Spirits.​

Local Successes


The region boasts a strong cluster of medical device manufacturing plants and a strong innovation support eco-system.  In addition, manufacturers throughout Simcoe County, Barrie and Orillia have pivoted operations to make medical supplies amid the COVID-19 pandemic.   
World class companies and products made​ in our region include: 

​​​Baxter Canada  
The impressive 180,000 square foot manufacturing facility opened in 1957 and currently employs more than 430 people. It is the only large-scale manufacturing plant producing life-sustaining intravenous and dialysis solutions in Canada. Many medical breakthroughs have come through this plant and the worldwide corporation. 

Molded Precision Components (MPC) 
MPC is a vertically integrated precision injection molding facility with its own in-house tooling operation, serving the medical sector. A trailblazer in the implementation of Industry 4.0 and with a blockbuster response to COVID-19, MPC’s flexible manufacturing approach, ingenuity and “make it happen” approach has been as a result of a joint venture to design, tool, manufacture and deliver to market a product called Shield-U, a 100% recyclable, comfortable and ‘Class 1 medical-approved’ face shield. 

Develops and manufactures innovative and proprietary medical devices, including surgical tools, respiratory equipment, PPE gear, and wound care. Also acts as a major contract manufacturer in certified clean-room injection molding. 
Interspec Systems  
Established in 1972, Interspec Systems Ltd designs and manufactures top quality, adaptable patient care systems. Interspec healthcare projects and equipment can be found at major hospitals across Canada, the United States, Puerto Rico, Ghana and Asia. 
KeeBee Play 
Keebee Play has been designing and manufacturing one-of-a-kind play products for commercial /institutional environments for more than 10 years. The firm recently developed a new technological activity to help engage people living with dementia through a divisio of their business called Ambient Activity Technologies. 

Solarc Systems Inc  
Since 1992, Solarc has been dedicated to building affordable, medical grade, home phototherapy solutions.  
Theta TTS 
Designed and patented the DoorRetractor, a cost-effective tool for hands-free door opening, helping employees return to workplaces safely.  

Busch Systems and Aereus Technologies​ 

Together these companies have developed the first antimicrobial recycling and waste containers, proven to kill 99.9% of bacteria in two hours or less. 
ESC En​vironmental Systems Corporation 
Designs and manufactures critical medical environments and cleanrooms for medical devices, biotechnologies, regenerative medicine, and biological safety laboratories, pharmaceuticals, pharmacies, ophthalmic. Ranked in 2019 Growth 500 of Canada’s fastest growing companies. 
DeutraMed Inc  
Deuterium Precursors and Intermediates are used for a variety of applications in high technology and life science sectors. 

Tollos ​
Designs and manufacturers single-patient-use medical devices, specializing in mobile lift systems that create a safer environment for healthcare staff. In response to the pandemic, have added the production of intravenous equipment to their manufacturing line. 
Elcoma Metal  
Manufactures high-grade commercial, residential, hospital, and washroom specialty equipment. 
Making it easy to connect people with the community care they need – the kind of care that helps them remain independent, supported and healthy at home. 

Northern Optotronics 
Canada’s premier multi-vendor service provider of lasers and medical equipment. 
Parsons ADL 
Parsons ADL Inc. is a designer, manufacturer and distributor of innovative home health care products, including walking devices and washroom fixtures. 
Cyberworks Robotics 
Software developer for autonomous wheelchairs. 
Image Dental Laboratory 
Advanced manufacturer of customized dental devices.

Trainer’s Choice 
Canadian Sport Medicine Complex, designing and manufacturing innovative brace and joint support products. 
Aeroex Technologies 
Adjusted their current product lines to meet new air cleaning requirements. Their IRIS HEPA filters, that are now available, provide air purification solutions primarily for medical professionals, two tiers higher than N95 masks presently being used. 

Falconfire Technologies

Initially established as a Biomedical service company, Falconfire Inc. Biomedical specialized in the service of Ultrasonic washing and disinfecting equipment.
Over the years Falconfire Inc. has included a line of MDRD and Endoscope Reprocessing support products with a full range of chemicals including our own R-Zyme Enzymatic Detergents, as well as numerous other products.
