How to Avoid the Great Resignation?

Three yellow rounds

The COVID-19 pandemic and the beginning of the “Grey Wave” have brought a workforce challenge, known as the Great Resignation. A recent McKinsey Study has shown that 40% of employees were at least somewhat likely to quit their jobs in the next 3-6 months.

What is causing the Great Resignation?

A number of factors contribute to employees looking elsewhere for work. Throughout the pandemic, we have seen a greater value than ever before seen placed on work-life balance, company culture, belonging and wellness. The good news is that these are all things that organizations can improve upon with minimal cost.

What can we do to retain our skilled workforce?

Many businesses are now re-evaluating their policies and operations and looking for new methods to both attract and retain their employees.

Some strategies include:

Empathetic Leadership: Expressing appreciation and understanding can make a huge impact, ensuring employees feel valued.

Staff Engagement: Make your engagement meaningful. Take opportunities to enhance corporate culture and values in your communications. The last two years have brought a lot of uncertainty and it’s more important than ever to keep your staff updated and address changes to the workplace and future workplace strategies.

Learning and Development: Employees are finding increased value in education and work assignments that allow them to learn new skills and improve knowledge.

Flexible Work Arrangements: Flexible work such as hybrid models, may hit the happy medium for staff who enjoy the flexibility of working from home but miss the camaraderie of the workplace. According to the LifeWorks Mental Health Index, 29% of Canadians want to have flexibility in their work location in the post-pandemic work world.
